I’m excited to share that I’ve started a team for the Susan G. Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk because I am committed to creating a world without breast cancer! I am proud to lead my team, as this cause is very personal to me.
In February 2013, at the age of 36, I was diagnosed with Stage III Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I had just moved to Atlanta, Ga, with my then 5-year-old daughter, to begin graduate school for my master’s degree in nursing. I decided to continue school during my fight. I went through chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, and went into remission in August 2013. In December 2014, I graduated with a dual master’s degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Nurse Educator. Today, I am celebrating 11 years (and counting) cancer free!
This year alone, more than 300,000 people living in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer. And while great strides have been made in prevention and treatment, there is still so much work to be done to find the cures to end this terrible disease.
